Historical Archive

Consultation of Archival Heritage
A portion of the inventories of our university's vast archival heritage is available online. The digitized archives are managed and preserved by the General Archive of the University, managed by the Document Management Office, and other structures (mainly CASREC and CAB). In the coming months, the archives of the Botanical Garden, digitized by the University Library Center, will also be fully available online.

Access to the Study Room of the Historical Archive of the University
The study room is open from Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 1 pm. Due to the limited number of seats available, access is by appointment, by writing to archiviostorico@unipd.it, also suggesting possible dates. It is located at Palazzo Bo - Rectorate, 3rd floor. Considering that most of the documentation is stored off-site, it is advisable to indicate in the appointment request what you wish to consult or the subject matter, in order to ensure the availability of the requested materials for the agreed date.

The archival heritage that reflects the history of the University of Padua over the centuries is organized in the Historical Archive, a section of the General Archive of the University. The documentary sources dating up to 1806 constitute the Ancient Archive: they contain the collections from various academic institutions, endowed with greater or lesser autonomy, that formed the University until the end of the 18th century.
The year 1806 marks the dividing line between two historical phases in the structure of the University and, consequently, in its archival collections. With the fall of the Republic of Venice and the transition of Veneto under French and Austrian rule, the University, becoming part of a state university system, transitioned to a centralized and hierarchical structure. From an archival perspective, this entails the transition from a multiplicity of sources (the various entities that contributed to the traditional university system) to a modern archive, reflecting the different authorities, bodies, and offices of the new University.
A decisive impetus to the organization of the Ancient Archive came in 1893 from Giuseppe Giomo, of the State Archives of Venice, who created a fundamental inventory of the existing materials. The Ancient Archive is currently housed at Palazzo Bo.
The collections after 1806 constitute the 19th Century Archive, which includes documents from 1807 to 1900, and the 20th Century Archive, with documents dating from 1901 to 1960.
