The PhD Programme in Philosophy is a collaboration between professors from the Department of Philosophy, Sociology, Education and Applied Psychology (FISPPA) and the Department of Political Science, Law and International Studies (SPGI).
The fields of investigation of the PhD Programme cover the entire history of philosophy and science, political philosophy and the history of political thought, and problems in theoretical and practical philosophy.
The specific thematic areas of research are:

  1. Philosophy and History of Ideas: History of Ancient Philosophy, History of Medieval Philosophy, History of Modern Philosophy, History of Contemporary Philosophy, History of Philosophical Historiography.
  2. Political philosophy and History of political thought, with particular reference to the genesis and modifications of fundamental modern political concepts and to questions of modern political subjectivity.
  3. Theoretical and practical philosophy: Theoretical philosophy, logic, philosophy of language; Moral philosophy and applied ethics; Aesthetics and philosophy of art; Themes and problems of classical German philosophy.

The doctorate aims to provide specialised research skills in the entire history of philosophy and competences in the interdisciplinary study, updated to the international debate, of the philosophical problems related to the topics being researched.

It thus aims to train scholars of international standing both in the field of historical-philosophical research and in the field of theoretical philosophical disciplines and to provide skills to work where the novelty and complexity of processes require a high degree of understanding of the trend lines and development prospects of new economic, social and political subjects.
In addition to a university career and research activities at Italian and foreign centres, the main professional profiles include teaching in secondary schools, work at publishing houses and newspapers, significant roles within the public administration and positions within foreign institutions.
