Giulio Di Toro is Full Professor of Structural Geology at the University of Padua, research associate at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) and former Chair in Geology at Manchester University (2015-17), Enseignant Chercheur at Ecole Normale Superieure (2016, Paris) and player of the Italian national volleyball team (1991-93). His research activity is aimed at understanding the seismic cycle through geological fault surveys, rock deformation experiments, microanalytical/microstructural studies and numerical models. His research groups, also funded by the European Research Council for 4 M€ (projects ERC StG USEMS and ERC CoG NOFEAR), have over the years involved people of different ages (from Bachelor’s degree students to senior Staff) and nationality including geologists, seismologists, geophysicists and engineers. Many of them have obtained permanent positions in the Academy, industry and prestigious awards and funding. Up to July 2023, the research activity resulted in the publication of ca. 140 scientific papers, including the proposal of a general law for friction during earthquakes (Di Toro et al., Nature 2011) and the installation of two complementary experimental machines dedicated to the study of the seismic cycle: SHIVA (INGV-Rome) and ROSA (University of Padua). In recent years he has also directed his research to the study of earthquakes in the presence of hot and pressurized fluids, including applications to human-induced seismicity.
