Fabio Sarto obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Sports Science at the University of Padova (UNIPD), Italy, with an exchange period at KU Leuven, Belgium. He pursued a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at UNIPD under Prof. Narici, investigating neuromuscular adaptations to physical inactivity and sarcopenia in humans. As a postdoctoral researcher, he focused on the neuroprotective effects of exercise in aging and advanced his expertise in muscle function assessment, musculoskeletal imaging, electrophysiology, and biomarkers of neuromuscular degeneration. He has built an extensive international network, collaborating with institutions such as Stanford University and the National Institute on Aging. His academic achievements include a strong publication record in international journals and multiple prestigious awards, including the ECSS Young Investigator Award (2022), the APS International Early Career Physiologist Travel Award (2023 & 2024), and selection for Experimental Physiology’s Future Leaders Scheme (2024). His MSCA project, SMA-RT, will explore the mechanisms and therapeutic potential of exercise in Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). During his outgoing phase at Harvard University, he will investigate skeletal muscle adaptations to overloading in SMA mouse models. In the incoming phase at UNIPD, he will assess whether these mechanisms translate to SMA patients undergoing resistance training. By integrating preclinical and clinical research, his project aims to establish exercise as a strategy to improve the quality of life in SMA, with potential implications for other neuromuscular disorders.
