Eric Ruzicka grew up in Neenah, WI (USA). He received his B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse in 2016 and his Ph.D. in polymer chemistry from the University of South Carolina in 2023. His thesis work, conducted under the supervision of Professor Brian Benicewicz, focused on the synthesis and characterization of polymer grafted nanoparticles, with an emphasis on gas separation.
In 2023, he accepted a position with the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington D.C. where he worked on the synthesis of alkaline solid-state single-ion polymer electrolytes for secondary silver-zinc batteries. This successful project led to two papers, a patent, and is anticipated to be developed on a large scale for naval operations. Other notable projects include the synthesis of electrically conductive phthalonitriles, multi-functional thermosets, and the development of 3D electrodes.
Recently, he was awarded the MSCA fellowship where he will be continuing and expanding his work in membranes for energy application under the supervision of Prof. Edmondo Benetti and Prof. Francesca Lorandi. The project “POLY-VOLT” entails monitoring and studying the physicochemical properties and responses of lithium metal batteries by tailoring the architecture of polymer grafted nanoparticle electrolytes using controlled polymerization methods. By understanding the relationship between polymer architecture and Li conductivity, these electrolytes could enable long term advances in the deployment of more reliable and energy efficient batteries.
